Courage, Community, and Living Life Out Loud

From the time he first came to CCHAT as a toddler, Miller has lived with curiosity, energy, and an unshakable spirit. Diagnosed with hearing loss in infancy, Miller began services at CCHAT at just nine months old, where he received listening and spoken language support that laid the foundation for communication and confidence.
His family remembers those early years with gratitude, saying CCHAT helped prepare him “for the challenges children with hearing loss face in school and the world.”
Facing Challenges and Celebrating Strength
While Miller made great progress in speech and listening, his life has also included significant medical challenges. He faces a rare neurodegenerative disease and has undergone 17 surgeries and multiple PICU stays. Through it all, his determination has never faded.
After mainstreaming out of CCHAT at age three, Miller continued receiving CCHAT speech therapy services through age six. His family says the listening and spoken language tools he learned have stayed with him as he moves through life.

As he grew older, Miller’s boundless energy and passion found expression in big and small ways. Whether helping at his family business that gives back to the community or spending time with his friends in the Fire and Police Departments, he’s always approached life with enthusiasm and kindness. Miller's love of law enforcement was honored during his Make-A-Wish in 2019 when he was medically transported from the PICU to attend the Sacramento Police Department's graduation as a member of the 19BR2 class. Miller was given a field promotion as an Honorary Lieutenant by Chief Daniel Hahn in 2021. His story and his bravery continue to inspire law enforcement agencies across the country.
Living the Dream: A Day as an NYPD Officer
In a moment that captured hearts nationwide, 18-year-old Miller was recently sworn in as an honorary NYPD police officer for a day - a dream-come-true experience that allowed him to ride along with officers, tour parts of the department, and be recognized for his courage and commitment to community.
Miller, who traveled from Sacramento to New York for the experience, beamed as officers welcomed him and Commissioner Jessica Tisch administered the oath. Afterward, Miller proudly declared, “I can definitely protect New York and keep the community safe.”
Despite ongoing fatigue from his health condition, his joy was unmistakable, and his family shared that this honor energized him and reminded them all how far he’s come.

Giving Back and Inspiring Others
Miller’s story is not only one of personal achievement but of community impact. His family’s business actively employs people with disabilities and supports causes that matter, including CCHAT events. In fact, Miller’s Ace Hardware served as the presenting sponsor for CCHAT’s Bike 4 Fun 2023 event, where Miller returned to campus as grand marshal and helped raise significant community support.
Miller applies the skills he learned at CCHAT daily at the hardware store, listening to customers' requests, answering phones, and asking for Ace Rewards numbers at the register. His tale brings the mission of early intervention and family partnership full circle, from the first sounds heard and spoken to community celebration and everyday bravery.
A Message of Courage and Possibility
Miller’s journey reminds us that with early identification, the right support, and a strong partnership between families and educators, children who are deaf and hard of hearing can thrive in every stage of life.
He’s not just an alum. He’s living proof that early support opens doors, that bravery looks like showing up again and again, and that aspirations matter no matter the obstacles.
