Bryce’s Early Years and Hearing Journey

From the very beginning, Bryce Dougherty’s journey has been shaped by resilience, love, and an unwavering commitment from his family.

After failing his newborn hearing screening, Bryce was diagnosed as profoundly deaf at just 9 months old. Like many families of children who are deaf and hard of hearing, his parents stepped into a world of uncertainty. The early days were filled with research, questions, and careful decision-making as they searched for the best path forward. With guidance from Children’s Hospital Oakland, cochlear implants were recommended as Bryce continued to meet developmental milestones.

At the same time, Bryce began attending CCHAT through the Baby and Me program. Those early moments were not just about learning for Bryce, but for his entire family. Surrounded by support, they began to understand hearing loss, language development, and what was possible for their son.

It was the beginning of a journey that would change everything.

Growing Confidence at CCHAT

At CCHAT, Bryce found more than a school. He found his voice.

Through daily routines, consistent support, and intensive listening and spoken language education, Bryce began to build the skills that would shape his future. He learned to listen, to speak, and to connect with the world around him. Milestone after milestone followed, from early language development to reading, singing, and even speaking in front of an audience.

As his language grew, so did his confidence. What started as small steps quickly became something much bigger. Bryce began to carry what he learned beyond the classroom, communicating with ease and showing a growing sense of independence.

Behind his success was a remarkable team. His teachers and therapists guided him through critical stages of development, while his family created a powerful support system at home. His grandparents, all retired educators, became an essential part of his daily life. They helped bring him to school, reinforced what he was learning, and worked alongside his parents to ensure consistency every step of the way.

Together, they created an environment where Bryce was surrounded by encouragement, structure, and belief in his potential. With that kind of support, he was set up not just to succeed, but to thrive.

From the Classroom to the Pool: Finding His Passion

What began with water safety lessons soon became a defining part of Bryce’s life.

Through early exposure at a young age, Bryce developed comfort in the water that quickly turned into a passion. He joined a swim team and, by age 12, took on a new challenge with water polo. Today, he competes at a high level with Big Valley Water Polo Academy, including at the Junior Olympics.

In the pool, Bryce faces challenges that many athletes never have to consider. As an athlete who is deaf, he relies on his cochlear implants and specialized equipment to stay connected during practices and games. With determination and adaptability, he has learned to communicate with coaches and teammates in a fast-paced environment where every second counts.

His teammates and coaches see more than just his athletic ability. They see his perseverance, his work ethic, and the way he shows up every day ready to give his best. Bryce is not only a valued member of his team but someone who has made a lasting impact on those around him.

And Bryce understands the bigger picture. By sharing his journey, he is helping other children who are deaf and hard of hearing see what is possible. His message is simple but powerful. You can do anything you set your mind to.

Inspiring Others and Looking Ahead

Today, Bryce’s journey continues to inspire not only his family but everyone who hears his story.

His transition into mainstream education, while emotional for his parents, came naturally to him. Years of structure, support, and preparation at CCHAT gave him the confidence to walk into new environments ready to succeed.

And succeed he has. Bryce has earned honor roll every year from kindergarten through middle school and continues to excel academically. His achievements in math and reading are impressive, but what stands out most are the awards voted on by his peers. Recognition for kindness, leadership, and responsibility speaks to the person he is, not just the student he has become.

For his family, these moments mean everything. His mother describes him as a phenomenal young man with a deep sense of perseverance. She sees in him a strength that cannot be taught, a determination that will carry him far in life.

Bryce’s story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when children are given the tools, support, and belief they need to succeed. Through early listening and spoken language education, a dedicated community, and a family who never wavered, Bryce has grown into a confident, capable, and inspiring young man.

For families just beginning their journey, his story offers something invaluable. Hope.
