CCHAT Event Spotlight: End-of-Year Program

Each school year, dozens of CCHAT children with hearing loss progress toward their listening and spoken language goals. They work hard in the classroom, during daily speech therapy and at home as they build a foundation of communication skills that will carry them throughout life.

CCHAT kids get a chance to show off what they have learned and how far they have come every June at the CCHAT End-of-Year Program. Family members and community supporters always enjoy seeing and hearing what is possible for children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

What is the End-of-Year Program?

As the school year draws to a close, each class at CCHAT – from Toddlers up to Primary grades – picks a song to perform. They practice for weeks in preparation for taking the stage at the End-of-Year Program in front of friends, families and CCHAT supporters. The event is typically emceed by a CCHAT alumni student and includes schoolwide favorite songs, such as Old MacDonald, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Slippery Fish.

Every child who participates in this spirited night is a winner. For some, this victory is simply having the courage to take the stage. For others, taking the microphone and showcasing their spoken language skills in front of an audience is a highly gratifying experience. Watching the progression of students from year-to-year is truly rewarding for CCHAT staff and families.

In addition to each class’ performance, CCHAT also takes this time to recognize all of the students who will be transitioning from the program that year. Parents are encouraged to share a few words about their CCHAT experience, and a slideshow commemorates the child’s time in the program with pictures throughout their journey.

Who is Invited to Attend?

The CCHAT End-of-Year Program is a free event open to the public. Families and friends of students are encouraged to attend to see their loved one take the stage. CCHAT also encourages the general community to come to the event, as the night truly encapsulates the power of the CCHAT program. For some guests, this is their first chance to see the magic of a child with hearing loss speaking, singing and dancing.

Regardless of one’s affiliation with CCHAT, the End-of-Year Program is an uplifting event that leaves everyone feeling joyous and proud.
