Theresa Smith
Theresa (Terry) began her teaching career at the CCHAT Center in 2003, where she taught preschool students for three years. This experience underscored the importance of building a strong language foundation for learners who are deaf and hard of hearing, on which to build academic skills - a principle that has influenced her practice ever since. She went on to teach in public schools, both as a classroom teacher and as an itinerant teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing, supporting students across their home districts. In this work, she has served children who use a range of communication modalities, including auditory-oral communication, Signed English, and American Sign Language (ASL). More recently, Terry returned to CCHAT part-time to support students in their mainstream settings.
She earned an Education Specialist Instruction Credential: Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Level II) from San Jose State University. Additionally, she holds a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential through a joint program of the University of California, Davis, and California State University, Sacramento.
