Speech Language Pathology Assistant / Substitute Teacher

Description

Under the general direction of the Executive Director and specific supervision of the teacher / SLP, this position works with regular education and special education students individually or in groups, following a prescribed course of instruction; assists the teacher / SLP in the use of acceptable behavior management techniques; relieves the teacher of routine clerical duties; assists the teacher / SLP in the development of materials and teaching aids; and other related work as may be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Works with regular and special education students individually or in groups; reinforces / follows-up SLP / teacher’s lessons as directed; tutors students
  • Assists in preparation, organization and maintenance of instructional materials and teaching aids
  • May follow SLP / teacher’s lesson plans and assist teacher in preparation of plans or develop plans based on SLP / teacher’s direction and explanation of students’ needs
  • Assists in maintaining positive classroom control; supervises students as required; accompanies students on field trips
  • Assists in maintaining a supportive learning environment and atmosphere conducive to student use and education; assists in maintaining a clean, safe and orderly classroom / therapy environment
  • Performs a variety of routine clerical and record keeping activities such as taking roll, filling out forms and applications, correcting papers, typing and duplicating materials
  • Assists SLP / teacher in following prescribed course of instruction
  • Assists SLP / teacher in adherence to educational and behavioral goals and objectives of individual students’ IFSP / IEP’s
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with co-workers, administration, students and parents concerning the educational progress of students
  • Inventories and requisitions supplies and materials as needed; checks out, orders, processes and maintains books and reference materials from a variety of sources
  • Attends staff meetings, workshops / in-services and other meetings as required
  • Assists in proctoring and scoring tests, charting student progress and in keeping records and grades
  • Assists in the evaluation of instruction and consults with SLP / teachers regarding educational and behavioral needs of students
  • Assists students in using computers and other audio-visual equipment; supervises students in computer lab settings
  • Respects the confidential nature of student records, special education files and school reports
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily

  • Bachelors degree with a 30-day substitute credential or SLPA license
  • One year experience working in a school setting
  • Familiarity with computers desired
  • Behavior management familiarity and experience with special education students preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as CCHAT may find appropriate
  • Regular attendance is required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Ability to kneel and pick up 35 pounds
  • Ability to stand and bend over students’ desks for long periods of time
  • Ability to write using a pen or computer for long periods of time

WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Office / classroom environment with moderate noise
